Crypto: This Whale Has Silently Accumulated $3 Billion in Bitcoin

Bitcoin: “my precious”. Among the accumulators of bitcoins (BTC), we can distinguish two very distinct behaviors. First there are those who shout proudly on all the roofs, like MicroStrategy and its 152,800 bitcoins. Then there are those who want to much more discreetlike this other company which, however, has also subtly garnered a nice windfall of more than 118,000 BTC without making a single announcement. It would actually be the broker robinhood (or from Geminibecause in fact, no official confirmation has been made at this stage).

A whale was accumulating BTC in the shadows…

Over the past three months, a Bitcoin address (bc1ql49…59v2) has quietly amassed large amounts of BTC without being noticed… so far at least. Since, as Cryptoast reports in particular, the sum more and more colossal of bitcoins that this address has managed to set aside is starting to get people talking in the cryptosphere.

From the start, around mid-May 2023, it was thousands of BTC that this – obviously very rich – whale transferred the cryptocurrency to his address. Today, she thus accumulates a treasure of 118,300 bitcoin. Even after the recent crypto market flash crash of August 17, this represents the impressive sum of more than $3 billion.

Robinhood: a low-key, but hardcore bitcoin fan?

It is using the services ofArkham Intelligence that the identity of this big whale could be found. Briefly recall that this project recently launched a platform, THE ” On-Chain Intelligence Exchange »which makes it possible to obtain intelligence data on exchanges carried out on the blockchain.

By entering the BTC address mentioned above, it turns out that it would therefore belong to robinhoodthe American brokerage firm specializing in serving small individual holders (stocks and cryptos).

Or is it actually the Gemini crypto exchange?

Be careful though! In addition to thelack of comments by Robinhood on the matter, some other observers believe that this address might actually belong to Geminithe crypto-exchange of the Winklevoss brothers.

At the time of this writing, we therefore do not have the last word… or at least, no certainty on who this huge bitcoin whale may be… while it almost rivals the much more communicative MicroStrategy group. On the other hand, one observation is shared by many observers. It is enough oddand in any case very riskyof keep as many bitcoins on a single addresswhere most crypto exchanges split their crypto holdings across multiple addresses.
