The background is a call by the opposition for a demonstration on November 15th. The government has banned them. “The US embassy in Cuba insists on its sad and shameful role of undermining the internal order in our country,” wrote Díaz-Canel on Twitter on Monday. Opposition groups are encouraged and encouraged by the diplomatic mission.
Cuba had described the planned protest as a “provocation” and banned it. The authorities justified this by saying that the organizers had ties to Washington. On Sunday Díaz-Canel warned the Central Committee of the Communist Party that “there are enough revolutionaries on the island to (…) oppose any kind of demonstration aimed at destroying the revolution”.
In July, thousands of Cubans demonstrated in several cities against the economic crisis, dealing with the corona pandemic and for more freedoms in the socialist country. More than a thousand people were arrested and around half are still in prison, according to the human rights organization Cubalex.
