2023 was a particularly rich, not to say crazy, year in terms of cinema. Thousands of films were screened in theaters, several of which left a lasting impression on spectators and the 7th Art. Compared to Hollywood, French productions are not left out. On the contrary, a French film has just been nominated five times for the Oscars. It’s historic!

French cinema in 2023

Movie fans probably had their best year yet. 2023 was incredibly rich in cinematography, both in Hollywood and in Asia (China, South Korea, India, Japan) without forgetting France. The French 7 Art has particularly distinguished itself over the last twelve months with a panel of feature films all very different and like a cinema that knows how to take risks and establish itself beyond our borders. Between fantastic, horrific, dramatic, historical offerings… and of course the endless comedies, French cinema has shone on its domestic market, but also internationally. The critical and commercial success of Anatomy of a Fall is edifying proof of this.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of notable French films of 2023:

  • Anatomy of a fall
  • Good behavior
  • Disco Boy
  • Farang
  • I will always see your faces
  • The Book of Solutions
  • The Goldman trial
  • The animal kingdom
  • Mars Express
  • Omar the strawberry
  • Vermin
  • Vincent must die
  • Yannick

Anatomy of a success

Anatomy of a Fall is undoubtedly the great success of the French 7th Art in 2023. The dramatic thriller directed and co-written by Justine Triet (Sibyl, Victoria) won all the votes from both the press (96% on RottenTomatoes) than the general public (90% on RottenTomatoes). The feature film, directed among others by Sandra Hüller and Swann Arlaud, grossed more than 23 million US dollars internationally for an estimated budget of 6.2 million and won 1,386,484 in France alone. Even before its release, the film was making waves by winning the Palme d’Or at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival which was held in May 2023.

The rewards are raining down on Anatomy of a Fall. At the 81st Golden Globe Awards, he walked away with two awards: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Screenplay. And the Césars (February 2024) and the Oscars (March 2024) seem inclined to confirm this trend. Anatomy of a Fall is nominated 11 times for the Césars and 5 times for the Oscars respectively. He could thus walk away with the Oscar for Best Film, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Editing and finally Best Original Screenplay. With five nominations for the most prestigious awards ceremony in the United States, Anatomy of a Fall marks the history of French cinema, but another film did much better a decade earlier.

10 Oscar nominations: the absolute record for a French film

The Artist is undoubtedly the French film which holds the absolute record for Oscar nominations. The film directed by Michel Hazanavicius (OSS 117, Coupez!) with Jean Dujardin in the title role was nominated 10 times and ultimately left with 5 statuettes including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Costumes and Best Film Score. It must be said that The Artist had everything to seduce the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with its strong biases (black and white, 4/3, silent) and its central theme: cinema. It is quite simply the French film with the most Oscar awards in history.
