If you thought that Netflix series set in France were too far from reality to interest foreigners, you were wrong! Last Thursday, the National Cinema Center (CNC) published a study showing that fiction with France as its playground has a real impact on the country’s tourism. Among them, we note for example Emily in Paris And Lupine, two of the series most often cited by those questioned (38% for the first, 11% for the second). It must be said that touring the Latin Quarter in Paris has become one of the favorite activities of a good number of tourists since Netflix introduced its subscribers to the places by following Emily’s adventures. Of course, Netflix’s cameras forget to film some uncinematic details like rats, garbage and other joys of the capital, but it must be said that the places make you want to be visited.

According to this same CNC study, 79% of tourists surveyed have seen at least one of the foreign series filmed in France offered in a selection. In 2018, this same question gave only 39% positive answers. Cinema tourism therefore seems to have found new followers since the rise of Netflix and its new series. Eight out of ten tourists also declared that the French films or series they were able to see made them want to visit the country., although this is not the only reason. Still according to this CNC study, foreigners are not the only ones to have taken advantage of a film or series to discover France. Indeed, 22% of French tourists decided to visit a location revealed in a film production. For them, however, it is not really the capital that is targeted.


This is not the first time that a film or series has had an impact on tourism

If Netflix series have had a real impact on tourism in France, this is not the first time that we have noticed such a consequence of film productions. Indeed, regions like the North where the Arcachon bay had already seen their tourist rates increase drastically since the release of French films like Welcome to the Ch’tis Or The little handkerchiefs. Furthermore, even if their number was much lower previously, foreign tourists had already expressed their desire to visit France thanks to films before the arrival of Emily in Paris or Lupin. Most of them then cited Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain or even Intouchables. Unfortunately, this type of practice also has a certain detrimental effect on the regions concerned since some are not prepared enough to receive so many tourists at once.
