A reassuring trailer

A new teaser has been released for the live action adaptation of the City Hunter anime which was announced in December 2022. The film stars Ryohei Suzuki as the franchise’s protagonist, Ryo Saeba, and Misato Morita as his partner, Kaori Makimura. The film reveals itself a little more, we see in particular that the action takes place in our time in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, unlike usual where it takes place in the 80s. In addition, the main character retains this this time the long coat from the original manga instead of the blue jacket adopted for the anime. Fans can be reassured since we find in this teaser, everything that makes the original work, with humor and very “badass” action worthy of Ryo Saeba’s reputation. The author of the manga, Tsukasa Hojo, notably revealed that this Japanese adaptation had been in preparation for 10 years, and that he was expecting a cast that was truly passionate about City Hunter, and which offered a “fresh and realistic perspective that is not strictly related to the manga.”

Adaptations with more or less success

Netflix’s adaptation of City Hunter joins a small list of films that have been more or less successful. To begin with, we can’t miss Nicki Larson, who is inspired by Tsukasa Hojo’s manga, with Jackie Chan in the role of Ryo Saeba. Even if some liked the film for its omnipresent humor and its rather decent fight choreography, for many, it is just a nonsense that is more of a “Jackie Chan” style feature film than a faithful adaptation. We then have Mr Mumble, a film which takes up the City Hunter manga in an unofficial way, rather appreciated since it is faithful to the spirit of the original work, we can only regret the absence of Kaori. And finally how can we not talk about our French version, Nicky Larson and the perfume of Cupidon, by the Philippe Lacheau gang. A rather popular film since we feel that it was made by enthusiasts who grew up with the animated series. With successful gags and action, it’s a real tribute to the flagship program of the Dorothée club. In any case, it looks good for the Netflix Japan adaptation, verdict on April 25, 2024.
