Cyberpunk 2077 will have a sequel (one day) (distant) (really distant)

CD Projekt has formalized the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, despite the media turmoil attached to the first opus. This is a long-term project.

The media fiasco attached to Cyberpunk 2077 will have no impact on the future of the saga launched in 2020 by CD Projekt. In a document published on October 4, the Polish company formalized a sequel, for the moment called Project Orion. It’s not even in the embryonic stage.

Project Orion is described as ” the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 that will prove the power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe “. And it is well noted that she ” will be developed by CD Projekt Red meaning that nothing has been started and that this is a long-term project. In parallel, the studio will continue to iterate The Witcher – its other strong license – with an unpublished trilogy, while a third brand is being created (Project Hadar).

What if Cyberpunk 2077 was just a draft?

An announcement too early?

As a reminder, Cyberpunk 2077 had formalized in 2012 for a release eight years later. In short, we are not about to play this sequel.

As you will have understood, information is scarce about Project Orion. But we hope that CD Projekt Red has learned some real lessons from Cyberpunk 2077, a real debacle that has caused too much ink to flow. Players have certainly not forgotten the state in which it was launched in December 2020, especially on the oldest consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). The disappointment was so immense that Sony pulled the video game from its PlayStation Store. Cyberpunk 2077 ended up coming back, by dint of welcoming updates and fixes. Today, the ambitious RPG is in a much better situation.

Despite unfavorable liabilities, CD Projet would be wrong not to try its luck again with the world of Cyberpunk, the opus 2077 having nevertheless sold 20 million copies. The broadcast of the series Cyberpunk: Edge Runners, developed in collaboration with Netflix, has relaunched the machine which will soon be powered by the release of an extension (Phantom Liberty, which will only be offered on PC, Xbox Series and PS5). CD Projekt should also continue in this direction, with more television and film adaptations in the future.

Beyond a new way of approaching development after a necessary rethinking, one thing seems certain about Project Orion: there will be a multiplayer mode designed to “ enrich the solo experience “. This is another lever that CD Projekt wishes to activate with, we imagine, a model modeled on that of Rockstar Games with GTA Online.
