A contractual clause signed by Tesla prevents the resale of the Cybertruck without explicit authorization from the manufacturer.

Expected for the end of the month, Tesla’s Cybertruck revealed some final secrets a few days ago, notably concerning the dimensions (and weight) of the beast. Today, we learned that a contractual clause will prevent the first buyers of the electric pick-up from reselling it. The first year, they will have to go through Tesla if they wish to get rid of their vehicle.

Tesla Cybertruck: no resale possible in the first year

It’s been official for a few weeks now, the first examples of Cybertruck will be delivered to their buyers at the end of November. Good news for this electric pick-up made official in 2019, even if Elon Musk has already warned that the rate of production will still be very limited. Let us also remember that upon its arrival in France, the vehicle will require a heavy goods vehicle license (C) to be driven.

Decidedly unusual, the American manufacturer’s electric pick-up also benefits from a very specific clause concerning its resale. Thus, according to the clauses specified by Tesla, the company indicates that it can “ demand damages in the amount of $50,000 or the value received for the sale or transfer, whichever is greater “.

More than a million customers have reportedly expressed interest in the vehicle, but the production rate will initially be limited to 125,000 units per year, before increasing to 250,000 vehicles produced per year from 2025. Some interested could therefore be forced to wait a few years before finally being able to climb aboard their car. A situation capable of causing the prices of the car to explode.

Tesla doesn’t want speculation

The American giant’s decision would therefore be motivated by the desire to avoid any form of speculation concerning the Cybertruck. Therefore, owners who wish to resell their vehicle within the first year must first inform the American manufacturer.

Tesla will in fact have priority over the repurchase of the vehicle, under certain conditions, in particular by deducting 0.25 dollars (0.23 euros) per kilometer traveled, not including wear and tear and the cost of any repairs. If the American group refuses to repurchase the vehicle, the owner will then be authorized to resell their Cybertruck to a third party, but this will require official written consent from the brand.

On the Tesla side, we want to avoid as much as possible that the first buyers engage in a form of speculation, by reselling their newly acquired Cybertruck at a higher price, playing on the rarity of the model.
