Czech Petra Kvitova wins the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin

The Czech Petra Kvitova, double winner of Wimbledon a decade ago, confirmed to be in good spirits this year by winning the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin on Sunday at the expense of the Croatian Donna Vekic, a week from the London Grand Slam. Already winner in March of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, the former world number two logically won against Vekic (number 23) in two sets, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6). She did not concede a set in the entire tournament. After frankly dominating the first round, she was a little worried in the second but was able to count on her experience and her serve.

31st career title

At 33, Kvitova consolidates her return to the Top 10 (9th) thanks to this title, the 31st of her career, eight days before the start of Wimbledon, which she has already won in 2011 and 2014, before to fall back in the world hierarchy. “I like grass, I like Berlin!” exclaimed Kvitova, hinting that she would return next year. Her serve was the barometer of the match, her five aces making it easier for her in the first set, which she won 6-2 with a final forehand into the Croatian’s net after just 33 minutes.

Vekic, who will be 27 on Wednesday, did not give up, however, pushing the Czech, whom she quickly took the face-off at the start of the second round. The Croatian, who was aiming for a fifth title, kept this advantage for a long time, even serving to win the set at 5-4. But, after managing to unbreak, the two-time Wimbledon winner finally won in a hotly contested tiebreak, eight points to six.
