  • After day 1, Switzerland and the Netherlands are tied 1-1 in the Davis Cup qualification.
  • Leandro Riedi pulls off the coup against Botic Van de Zandschulp and gets the point for Switzerland thanks to a 6:4, 7:6.
  • Previously, Marc-Andrea Hüsler lost his singles against Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets.

Leandro Riedi (ATP 175) also demonstrated his strong form at the Davis Cup. The 22-year-old, who recently won two Challenger tournaments, beat the much better ranked Botic Van de Zandschulp (ATP 63) in two sets.

Riedi demonstrated fighting qualities in both rounds. In the first set he got the break to make it 5:3, but immediately had to accept the rebreak. But he reacted promptly: he made the service breakthrough again and took the set 6:4.

Tiebreak decides

In the second set, Riedi even had to chase down a break. But with a convincing return game to make it 4:4, he found his way back into the passage. In the tiebreak, Van de Zandschulp made a few mistakes, including two double faults. Riedi then completed the 6:4, 7:6 (6:3) victory with a return winner.

Hüsler loses

In the first singles of the day, Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 199) lost against Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 29) with 6:7 (3:7) and 6:7 (3:7).

Hüsler got off to a bad start and quickly fell behind 0-2 due to a service loss. But the Swiss showed a reaction and managed the immediate rebreak. In a set at eye level, the tiebreak ultimately had to be decided. Griekspoor was better there at the crucial moment.

Griekspoor better in the tiebreaks

Hüsler also held up well in the second round and, like his opponent, played his service games without any major problems. But again Griekspoor was able to raise his level again in the short decision that had become necessary. After 1:50, the Dutchman converted his second match point to victory.

With the 1-1 draw, everything is still open between Switzerland and the Netherlands. The winner of the qualifying duel, which ends on Saturday with a doubles and two more singles (live on SRF), moves into the group phase of the 16 best nations in September.
