Dead Cells abandoned: “the worst asshole move imaginable”, an ex-developer castigates Motion Twin

Dead Cells is (very soon) over. Originally developed by Motion Twin then by Evil Empirea studio made up of former members of the first which took care of the design of the free and paid additional content, leaving Motion Twin go about his business Windblow.

After the future update 35, this will therefore be the end of Dead Cellsbut a former developer of Motion Twin is visibly very upset by this announcement. Sébastien Benard has not joined Evil Empirehe is developing a project in his corner, but on Discord (via PCGamesN), he castigated the choice of Motion Twin to abandon Dead Cells And Evil Empire in this way, evoking economic reasons, far from the creative concerns officially mentioned.

Since you asked me, I would just say that Motion Twin did the worst asshole move imaginable towards Dead Cells and Evil Empire. Having seen first-hand the real situation behind the scenes, I can honestly say I’m glad to no longer be a part of it. The official statement is pure marketing bullshit, how this situation happened is on a whole new level. I never imagined my old studio would turn out to be this greedy. I wish Evil Empire all the best for their next endeavors and hope that the people who work there survive this sudden economic downturn.

After this outburst of anger, Sébastien Benard explained himself a little more detailcongratulating Evil Empire for all the work accomplished on Dead Cells and remembering that the real creatives of the game have left the studio. According to him, Motion Twin would only be made up of three people who worked on the original game, including an employee who arrived late and another in administration. Even at Evil Empirethere have been departures, whether to found Shiro Gamescreate Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate or him, who does not reveal his next project. Sébastien Benard even declares that “the only real Dead Cells team now is basically Evil Empire, who have carried the flame for so long, with a true love of the franchise”. He recalls in passing that Dead Cells sold a million copies under the aegis of Motion Twinthen reached 10 million sales thanks to the work ofEvil Empire.

Sébastien Benard especially denounces the fact that Motion Twin abandon fans of Dead Cells and employees ofEvil Empire for the benefit of Windblow, his next project. But the hit title is already six years old, perhaps it was time for everyone to move on, Evil Empire obviously already has other projects in development. However, the studios had planned content for Dead Cells until 2025, hence the indignation of the former developer of Motion Twin.
