Deadpool 3: info, casting, release … All about the Marvel film with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman

In 2016, Tim Miller brought to the screen the adventures of Deadpool, the anti-hero created by the author / designer Rob Liefeld and the screenwriter Fabian Nicieza appeared for the first time in 1991 in the comic book New Mutants vol. 1 #98.

And it’s Ryan Reynolds, who had already played the character in the decried X-Men Origins: Wolverine alongside Hugh Jackman, who plays him.

With a budget of 58 million dollars, the film with trash humor, moreover prohibited for children under 12 on its release, is a real success and brings in 782 million dollars at the international box office.

2 years later, former stuntman David Leitch, who had just proven himself behind the camera with John Wick and Atomic Blonde, was entrusted with the direction of Deadpool 2.

A faithful sequel to the first opus in which the mercenary Wade Wilson faces Cable, played by Josh Brolin. With a more substantial budget of $110 million, this sequel brought in 785 million greenbacks worldwide and a third part has been announced.

But in the meantime, Disney is buying Fox, which until now held the rights to Deadpool. Very quickly, Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel, tries to reassure the fans and makes it known that the third adventure of Wade Wilson will be in the same line as its predecessors. For their part, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are delighted to be able to “release a madman into a sane world”.

Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine

While we knew little about Deadpool 3, in September 2022, Ryan Reynolds announced the return of his accomplice Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine. An unexpected return that sounds like a thunderclap because Wolverine is supposed to be dead in James Mangold’s Logan, released in 2017.

In December 2022, Hugh Jackman explains that Wolverine will be present in Deadpool 3 thanks to the Marvel multiverse. Shawn Levy’s film will thus in no way modify the timeline of Logan, whose action takes place in 2029. The Australian comedian, who has followed a drastic diet to get back into physical shape, then explains that he will hold a dual role in Deadpool 3.

The Wolverine of the X-Men cinematographic saga could therefore cross paths with that of the comics if we are to believe the filming photos of the film which reveal the famous yellow jumpsuit that the clawed mutant wears in the comics, but so far never worn in the screen.

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Garner… Who plays in Deadpool 3?

After years, Ryan Reynolds has therefore managed to bring back Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine. But the Canadian comedian and producer also asked Jennifer Garner, who played the slayer Elektra in Daredevil in 2003 and in the 2005 film of the same name, to reprise her role.

A return that suggests other cameos of the same ilk, and which has given fans the desire to find Ben Affleck in the role of Daredevil. But no information about this has yet been confirmed.

We also know that Karan Soni (Dopinder), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Leslie Uggams (Blind AI), Rob Delaney (Peter) or even Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio) will be back in this third episode.

Additionally, the film will star newcomers Emma Corrin (The Crown), who stars as the main antagonist, and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession).

Josh Brolinwho played Cable in the previous opus, could also return since during the promotion of Deadpool 2 (prior to the Fox takeover), it was announced that the character would reappear in several films. But nothing has been confirmed recently.

The story: what will Deadpool 3 be about?

We still don’t know anything about the plot of Deadpool 3 but we know that it will be about time travel and the multiverse.

The unofficial Twitter account Marvel Updates relayed a synopsis last March. According to their source, in this third movie, Deadpool would use Cable’s time machine (Josh Brolin) to rescue Wolverine before his death in Logan, which would lead to them being pursued by Tribunal of Anachronistic Variations agent Mobius, played by Owen Wilson in the Loki series.

The account adds that the events of Deadpool 3 should lead to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, due in theaters on April 29, 2026.

Release date: When is Deadpool 3 coming out?

Nowadays, Deadpool 3 is scheduled in our dark rooms on May 1, 2024. But filming had to be interrupted due to the actors’ strike which is currently paralyzing Hollywood and which could last until the fall, or even the beginning of 2024 according to experts. It is therefore very likely that the film will be postponed to a later date.

The double strike (writers and actors) indeed threatens Marvel’s all-out plan. On July 17, the two presidents Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito jointly released a statement in which they directly address the strikers:

“We’re grateful for all the work you’ve done on your respective projects, and it’s bound to be disappointing when blueprints need to be amended, but those changes are the very nature of production.

Our teams are no strangers to challenges and they know how to meet them. We appreciate the efforts that are being made to ensure that the situation goes well and we hope that an agreement will be reached quickly, in order to resume work.”
