Seven agenda items were addressed at the rural community. The main topics discussed were the expansion of the Ziegelbrücke vocational school and the bicycle path law.

Today, the majority of the Glarus community followed the requests of the government and the district administrator. Only for the expansion of the Ziegelbrücke vocational school was the loan increased by 1.72 million francs in order to build a gymnasium suitable for competitions.

There is a lot of potential in cycling in the canton of Glarus – everyone agreed on that. However, opinions differed when it came to the design of the new cantonal bicycle path law.

The federal requirements

As a result of a referendum in 2018, the federal government passed the Federal Law on Bicycle Paths. This obliges the cantons to plan and implement cycle path networks. They must issue follow-up legislation by the beginning of 2028.

The Greens and Green Liberals would have liked to have stricter requirements and deadlines laid down in cantonal law.

Without increasing the tempo and specifying the quantity

In their amendment, the Greens called for bicycle traffic to be doubled by law by 2040. The application was clearly rejected. The Green Liberals wanted to write shorter implementation periods than the federal government stipulate into the cantonal bicycle path law. This request was narrowly rejected.

The increase in the cycling department in the canton was undisputed.

The rural community has approved a loan of 35,555 million francs for the expansion and renovation of the Ziegelbrücke vocational school. The expansion is necessary because the Health and Social Education Center (BZGS) located in Glarus and the Commercial-Industrial Vocational School (GIBGL) in Ziegelbrücke are to be brought together locally.

Sports circles receive a competition hall

An additional application from “Sport Glarnerland” was also accepted. The planned triple gymnasium for the expansion in Ziegelbrücke will be built higher as a competition gymnasium. The hall should hold more spectators and be suitable for competitions for more sports. Additional costs of 1.72 million francs were approved for this.

Counterproposal for mayor election

The mayor and the state governor were elected from among the elected members of the government council: The new mayor and therefore president of the government council is Kaspar Becker (Die Mitte).

Normally this choice is uncontested. This year the name of Andrea Bettiga (FDP) was also called. Becker was clearly elected mayor. Bettiga will be his deputy.

Critical look at the current situation

In his opening speech, Landammann Benjamin Mühlemann emphasized that the future can only be shaped positively through dialogue and compromise. The rural community is the best example of this. He also advocated cooperation in Europe and increased spending in the army. Benjamin Mühlemann (FDP) steps down as a member of the government – he is now a member of the state council.
