Wayne Rooney now has less than nothing
Again bad news for Derby County: The English second division soccer team trained by Wayne Rooney is punished with a bad point deduction – and not for the first time. The reason this time is a special violation of the rules. Rooney Klub now has minus points after 17 games.
For the second time within a season, the English second division soccer team Derby County is punished with a drastic point deduction. As the club coached by ex-international Wayne Rooney announced, he accepted a deduction of nine points for violating the EFL (English Football League) rules for “profitability and sustainability”. The club had admitted the violation related to the £ 81 million sale of Pride Park Stadium to previous owner Mel Morris.
This decision marks the end of nearly two years of history after Derby was first indicted in January 2020. Because of the bankruptcy filing, the former soccer champion had already been deducted twelve points in September. The appeal against it was dismissed. After deducting a total of 21 points, Derby County now has three minus points, trailing last place in the championship table. This is not only the first time since the mid-1980s that the club is threatened with relegation to the third division, it seems almost inevitable.
Because at the end of the season, the Rooney club could even be deducted three more points if Derby County does not adhere to the financial framework that has been agreed with the EFL for the rest of the current season. According to its own statement, the association does not have the opportunity to raise another objection.
Carl Jackson, an administrator for Derby, said: “This has been a difficult affair given the various issues. While deduction is not ideal for any club, it was critical to the future of the club that all matters be between the EFL and the Club in relation to the past. This deal allows us to continue our restructuring strategy for the club with potential buyers. “
