The delivery has been “pending” for more than three years. In 2019, the lifeless body of 32-year-old Jeffrey Merriweather was discovered in the city of Atlanta, United States. Due to the body’s advanced state of decomposition, the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office sent it to the specialized laboratory in St. Louis, Missouri. Problem: the package, handled by the carrier FedEx, never arrived at its destination.
The last time the package tracking was updated, the young man’s body was in Austell, a FedEx processing center located less than 30 kilometers from Atlanta. Since then, the body of the 30-year-old has not been found. “It’s a nightmare you can’t wake up from”, exasperated Kathleen Merriweather, Jeffrey’s mother, in the columns of Journal-Constitution. “I don’t know how it could have happened when you have to sign to pick up a packageadds Jeffrey Merriweather Sr, the father of the deceased. There are tracking numbers, though.”
“Shipments of this nature are prohibited via the FedEx network”
In question, the carrier FedEx denies having made an error, believing that the remains of Jeffrey Merriweather should never have been under their responsibility. “Shipments of this nature are prohibited through the FedEx network.“, underlines a press release from the company. Our thoughts are with Mr. Merriweather’s family, however, we would like questions directed to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office instead..” Note that the “corpses, human organs or parts of human bodies; human or animal embryos, cremated or exhumed human remains“, are among the prohibited goods in the FedEx Services Conditions of Carriage.
At this time, it is unknown why the Fulton County Coroner’s Office chose to send Jeffrey Merriweather’s body via FedEx. The parents of the victim, they are done asking questions and simply want a “happy” ending. “At this point, all I want is what’s left of my son so I can put him to rest”saddens the father of the deceased.
