Several users report that the latest BIOS updates from Dell are preventing some of the brand’s computers from starting.

The Dell Latitude 5320 and 5520, Dell Inspiron 5680, and Alienware Aurora R8 are reportedly affected by the issue.

Several models affected

Recently, Dell released several BIOS updates for some of its desktop and laptop PC models. A quite ordinary procedure in the majority of cases, but this time these updates seem to be the cause of problems encountered by several models during startup. Users complain on the brand’s forums and on Reddit that they are unable to start their PC or, when they do, that they are faced with blue screen repeat. All, however, point to the latest BIOS updates as being responsible for their concerns.

After updating the BIOS of my 5320 to version 1.14.3 today, my laptop does not start “, Reports a user on the forum of the mark. Some people report that their PC’s power button turns on before turning off after a few seconds. In other cases, the PC starts up but the screen remains desperately black or they quickly see a blue screen before their computer shuts down again. An error also appears, which causes the computer to shut down when the user clicks “continue”.

Restoring an old BIOS version required

The models reported to be affected by this bug are the Dell Latitude 5320 and 5520, the Dell Inspiron 5680 and the Alienware Aurora R8. If you have updated the BIOS to version 1.14.3 for the Latitude, 2.8.0 for the Inspiron or 1.0.18 for the Aurora R8, you only have one solution left for the moment: restore an older version of BIOS. But the operation will not be easy, as reported by users who have tried the adventure.

Dell provides a tutorial on how to revert to a previous version, but affected computers having great difficulty starting up, it may be difficult to properly follow the instructions. A user detailed his way of doing things on the Dell forum, but he notes that it remains essential in the case of the laptops concerned to unplug the charger, remove the battery, press the power button for 15 seconds before replacing the battery and charger for the PC to accept booting, even after installing an older version of the BIOS.

Dell has not yet communicated on the problem.
