Demolition without mercy – destruction instead of preservation of old dairy farms

With the Esterházy Foundation’s large real estate holdings, some apparently believe that a building more or less does not matter. Monument protection sees it quite differently: The head of the Burgenland department of the Federal Monuments Office, Peter Adam, speaks of an irrecoverable loss for the cityscape.

In the future, only the sign “Parking Meierhof” will remind of the complex that has been in Eisenstadt since the end of the 17th century. It was built in the time of Paul I Esterházy, the first prince and one of the most influential personalities of the family, under whom Eisenstadt became a residential town and enjoyed great growth. The entrance gate with its historical coat of arms, the granarium (the former granary) and a small chapel are listed and should be preserved, the other residential and farm buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries were supposed to be in disrepair. Now they have disappeared forever. A Vorarlberg building contractor is planning a new building, but so far there is only a “basic idea”, says the Esterházy Foundation will replace the one-story old building.
