She suffers from “severe symptoms”.
Belinda Bencic is currently in isolation in Abu Dhabi. As the Olympic tennis champion announced on Instagram, she was infected with the corona virus. As she writes, she suffers from “fairly severe symptoms” despite the double vaccination. She has a fever, body aches and pains, and chills. Bencic: “I’m taking every precaution to get through this as well as possible.”
The Australian Open will take place on January 17th. The 24-year-old wants to take part there. Bencic: “The timing is not ideal, I was in the last steps of my preparation for the Australian Open.” But she writes: “I will be on my way to Australia as soon as I am healthy and the isolation period is over.” There are numerous get-well-wishes under her Instagram post. Tennis colleague Stefanie Vögele (31) and sprinter Ajla Del Ponte (25) also wish her a speedy recovery.
Corona caused unrest before the Australian Open last year. The Swiss athlete of the year had to be in hotel quarantine for two weeks before the tournament because other passengers tested positive on her flight. The third round already meant the end of the line for the eastern Swiss woman.
Bencic is not the only tennis great that tested positive for Corona this week. Rafael Nadal, who was also in Abu Dhabi, announced his illness on Monday. Nadal reported about his infection. He would have withdrawn and informed his contacts about the positive test result. As a consequence, the Spaniard left his tournament planning open for the season opener in Australia.
