Despite fines – climate glue: 100 arrests this week alone

The climate stickers are back: This has been observed not only on Vienna’s streets in the past few days, but also in the arrests in the federal capital. This week alone around 100 activists were taken away by the police…

In the week just ending, officers from the Vienna State Police Department had to arrest around 100 climate activists. For comparison: there were a total of almost 900 arrests last year. In addition, around 3,700 people were reported, of which around 150 were reported to the criminal justice system. Fines of 1,200 euros. This was despite the fact that a fine of 1,200 euros recently imposed by the LPD Vienna was confirmed by the State Administrative Court. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) also praised the executive in this regard: “The Vienna police not only take consistent and decisive action against the climate stickers on the streets, but also impose severe penalties. This path we have chosen will be consistently continued.”Four disruptive actions in just one weekThe fact that the number of Last Generation activists arrested this week is so high can be derived from the extensive disruptive actions in the past few days. First, an intersection in Vienna-Favoriten was paralyzed, on Tuesday climate adhesives were placed on the road in front of Schönbrunn Palace. On Wednesday, demonstrators blocked the entrance to parliament, and on Saturday the major protest finally took place on Museumsplatz (see photo). Fundamental right to climate protection demanded At their meetings, the activists repeatedly call on those “in charge” to take science seriously and to act with the necessary urgency. What the group wants: a fundamental right to climate protection in the constitution.
