Diamond League in Stockholm – Warholm wins despite protesters’ anger – Ceh still undefeated – Sport

  • Karsten Warholm wins a special 400m hurdles race at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.
  • In rainy conditions, Daryll Neita (200 m) and Soufiane El Bakkali (3000 m steeple) are also impressive.
  • In the discourse throwing, Kristian Ceh remains undefeated. Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis superior wins.
  • Swiss athletes are not at the start.

On the track

Favorite and Olympic champion Karsten Warholm remained untouched in 47.57 seconds – and also unmolested by a very special incident: A few meters before the finish line, several demonstrators had positioned themselves and blocked lanes 1-6 with posters. While Warholm was able to pull through on lane 8, his competitors literally ran over the climate activists who had sneaked onto the lane seconds earlier.

In the race, which was not very meaningful due to the incident, Kyron McMaster from the British Virgin Islands finished second behind the Norwegian, Rasmus Mägi (Estonia) was third. Warholm spoke of “impossible behavior” by the demonstrators.

Somewhat surprisingly, the favored Brit Dina Asher-Smith had to let her compatriot Daryll Neita catch her in the final meters. In 22.50 seconds Neita handed a modest time to victory, Asher-Smith stayed a whopping 7 tenths over her personal best in 22.58.

Soufiane El Bakkali, reigning Olympic and World Champion, was also unbeatable in Stockholm. The Moroccan completed the obstacle course in 8:09.84 minutes. He stayed a good 13 seconds above his personal best. On the final lap, he outperformed his last competitor, Getnet Wale from Ethiopia. Wales compatriot Abrham Sime completed the podium.

In the oval

Despite a best performance of the season of 6.66 m, Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo was not enough to achieve the victory she was aiming for: The German was “only” second behind Italy’s Larissa Iapichino (6.69 m) and is still looking for her top form. Ivana Vuelta from Serbia was 3rd with 6.58 m.

The man who says he wants to win everything he does in the Diamond League lived up to that in Stockholm: Kristian Ceh won with a personal best of 69.83 meters ahead of Sweden’s Daniel Stahl and Andrius Gudzius from Lithuania. After Qatar and Morocco, Ceh won for the third time.

With a two-hour delay due to the weather, the pole vaulters were also able to intervene in the Olympic Stadium. The competition then remained a clear affair: high-flyer Armand Duplantis (SWE) managed 6.05 m in the first attempt. 5.95 would have been enough for victory, second-placed Ernest John Obiena (PHL) tore three times at this height. Finally, Duplantis, who had increased the year’s world record to 6.12 m on Tuesday in Ostrava (CZE), tried to break the world record (6.22). However, his 3 attempts over 6.23 were unsuccessful.
