Their origin and ingredients are often questionable, but almost everyone has taken dietary supplements. A fact check…

Although many people now regularly take food supplements, there is still a lot of half-knowledge and too little education about the supposed miracle capsules. In an interview with the news agency spot on news, biochemist and nutritionist Martin Auerswald, author of “Facts Check Nutritional Supplements” (Herbig Verlag), has five important facts ready that not everyone knows, but everyone should know.

New dietary supplements are launched every day

“They are only tested and checked on a random basis – many of the preparations on the market are of questionable origin, with questionable ingredients and effects. Until there are better controls and regulations, it is important to trust in quality products and to remain skeptical when certain products do something are too cheap to be true.”

A balanced diet is not enough

“While the term ‘‘balanced diet’ is a so-called smoke word that has never been defined, even the healthiest diet is not enough. The fact is that every person has individual nutritional deficiencies. The reason for this is our lifestyle and diet, which are completely different today than they were 100 or 100,000 years ago. So it’s about giving our body what it needs so badly and doesn’t get enough through nutrition.”

Is Germany a vitamin deficient country?

“In many places, nutritional institutes say that Germany is a country of vitamin deficiency. But this is also not true: while a clinical deficiency (with manifest deficiency diseases) is rather rare, most people have subclinical deficiencies that can be detected in the blood and tend to have non-specific symptoms such as malaise, susceptibility to infection or fatigue can be recognized.”

Extracts are nothing more than the essence of certain natural remedies

“In naturopathy, they have a tradition that is sometimes thousands of years old. The transition between food and food supplements is often fluid: while coffee and tea are typical examples of hot water extracts that are common foods, there are extracts of Reishi, turmeric, frankincense or green tea as Buy food supplements in capsule or powder form. This can have a positive effect on your health in a targeted manner.”

Good education is crucial

“Without good education, the use of dietary supplements often borders on Russian roulette, with good education health and well-being can be improved. Because you can do dietary supplements right or wrong – just as nobody would tinker with their own car without prior knowledge, dietary supplements should only after good advice and education. If good education meets sensible use with high-quality products, dietary supplements can do a lot of good for us as a supplement to a healthy diet.”
