The train has the reputation of being one of the means of transport with the lowest CO2 emissions. But it also has the reputation of offering high prices, which is why the government and communities are increasing initiatives to make it more affordable.
The latest is called “+=Flex”. By offering reduced prices, this new initiative of the Occitanie region should also simplify the use of rail on a daily basis.
A uniquely regional initiative, but still appreciable
The service is based on an application called “Fairtiq”. Once installed, the SNCF promises discounts ranging from 20% to 90%.
The discount is substantial, but beware: it only applies to people aged 27 to 59. Young people and many seniors are excluded. In addition, this initiative was negotiated by the Occitanie region with the SNCF. Only regional LiO trains are therefore concerned. Launched this Tuesday 1er August, it is moreover a unique formula in France for the moment.
However, many people will be able to take advantage of this offer. This summer, vacationers choosing to travel within their own region will benefit from a nice discount.
Beyond the financial aspect, it is also simplicity that is put forward. Once the bank details have been entered into the application, all it takes is one click when boarding and another when getting off the train. The traveler’s smartphone takes care of booking the trip on its own and payment is made after the trip.
Increase from 80,000 to 100,000 daily travelers on the liO network
After the 300,000 TGV tickets at reduced prices and the discounts announced by the government, this additional initiative should make it possible to boost the number of travellers. On its scale, the Occitanie region had already launched 1 euro tickets on its trains. Its objective: to increase the number of daily passengers on its network from 80,000 to 100,000. Since 2019, it has already succeeded in increasing the use of its liO trains by 30%.
For its part, the SNCF is working hard to accommodate everyone despite a lack of space and more expensive places in the summer. The company has announced 450,000 additional seats compared to last year, particularly on the most popular routes. That said, delays and cancellations are still to be expected: remember to consult your rights before leaving: they have changed recently.
