Discussions about resignation – “Don’t let me drift”: Ruth Humbel criticizes her own party – News

  • The well-known Aargau Central National Councilor Ruth Humbel will resign by the end of the current legislature in autumn 2023 at the latest. The 65-year-old said in an interview with the “Aargauer Zeitung”.
  • When asked about a possible early resignation, she feels “bullied” by her party.

The Mitte party in the canton of Aargau had already publicly announced that National Councilor Ruth Humbel would step down this year. The national councilor for winegrowers, Andreas Meier, should move up. As a precaution, he resigned from the Aargau cantonal parliament before the summer holidays.

Humbel is one of the most prominent health and social politicians in Switzerland. She has been in Parliament since 2003. The current legislature is the last of the National Councilor. The period runs until December 2023.

Strong criticism from Humbel

“It’s a pressure that can be described as bullying,” said Humbel. “First the announcement that I’m going in the summer and now Andreas Meier’s resignation from the Great Council and his announcement that he’s moving up for me.” According to Humbel, talks between the center party and her about a possible earlier resignation have taken place. However, it was not agreed that she would resign in the summer, says the 65-year-old.

But I don’t let myself be pressured, I don’t let myself drift.

Humbel does not rule out early resignation for party tactical reasons before the elections in autumn 2023. “But I don’t let myself be put under pressure, I don’t let myself be driven,” she said in an interview.

The National Councilor is concentrating on other things

For the politician, the AHV vote on September 25 is still in the foreground. The vote is important for the National Councilor, because: “In the 19 years that I’ve been a National Councilor, we have never brought about a social work reform. It’s time.”
