Diversionary maneuver Kane over: The harsh reality surprises not only clueless Tuchel

For weeks, Harry Kane’s drama distracted from FC Bayern’s real problems. But now the hope is in Munich – and the record champions are on fire. The experts (and coach Tuchel) are still puzzling as to why the fire cannot be extinguished.

For many years, Uli Hoeneß was responsible for the smoke screens at FC Bayern. When he suddenly reappeared on the scene in the spring of this year, long-time observers of the Bundesliga smelled a rat. Uli Hoeneß, the headline machine, was back and immediately drew all the attention to himself. But it was precisely this surprising return that aroused the curiosity of many. Something had to be wrong internally at FC Bayern – there was no other way to explain Hoeneß’s verbal shadow boxing.

Since the sporting situation was not ideal back then, it was far from being as catastrophic as it is today, so most observers groped in the dark at first. And the smoke candles ignited by Hoeneß also worked extremely effectively and well with the general public. The former Bayern manager made the headlines almost at will and was a wonderful distraction from the team and their coach. Until the day Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić decided to sack head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

The fire that Hoeneß had publicly kept small up to this point has not been extinguished to this day. Rather the opposite. It continues to burn ablaze at FC Bayern Munich. Only the media distraction surrounding Harry Kane’s move to the record champions has largely obscured the view of the fire at Bayern in recent weeks. But now the beacon of hope has arrived on Säbener Strasse – and the football fans in the country are looking at a German champion on fire, irritated and curious.

Only a few days left

One thing seems certain: the problems at FC Bayern Munich lie much deeper than many would have guessed. After Julian Nagelsmann, Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidžić also had to leave in the summer. But the effect that this great upheaval should have had has fizzled out. Worse still, the situation gradually deteriorated after Nagelsmann was fired.

The attacks of the helpless-looking Tuchel against his own team surprise not only the experts. In any case, the words of Lothar Matthäus (“It can quickly become dangerous for him”) should not simply be dismissed at FC Bayern. However, you won’t. Only: It seems that FC Bayern Munich has lost its own center in the past few months – and is now having the greatest difficulties getting back on track. The famous and legendary “Mia san mia” can no longer be felt on the outside. What might it look like internally?

It seems more and more inevitable that FC Bayern Munich will also completely reorganize its squad. The solution to the question of what exactly is wrong with the composition of the team or the interaction of the individual players will probably be the record champions’ last desperate attempt to quickly get back on track. If this does not succeed in a timely manner, there will probably be more disruptive fires again and again – and sooner or later this will lead to Thomas Tuchel having to leave the club again.

Gone are the days when Harry Kane served as a diversionary tactic. Four weeks of training together didn’t bring any resounding success – even to the astonishment of coach Tuchel. Bayern still have a few days left. But should the league start at the weekend in Bremen go wrong… you don’t even want to think about it. Even Uli Hoeneß could no longer help with his media smokescreens.
