“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” or the sorcerer hero in search of a second chance

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – TO SEE

At the origin of our era, that of superheroes, extended sequels and franchises connected to each other, we come across the name of Sam Raimi, American director and talented formalist, who signed in 2002 the formidable first part of the first trilogy Spidermanwhose success was to change for a long time (we are still there) the horizon of the great Hollywood spectacle.

Twenty years later, including ten spent on television and as a producer following his previous feature film, The fantastic world of Oz (2013), we find him again at the controls of the latest addition to the Marvel stables, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, second big screen adaptation of the adventures of the sorcerer hero, created on paper by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Is a talented filmmaker at the head of a big machine still enough to make a difference? Yes, if we are to believe the success of this component, which avoids the emphatic heaviness or the spirit of seriousness generally attached to this type of production.

Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), “master of the mystical arts”, wakes up in bed from one nightmare to immediately find another: attending the wedding of the woman he loves, Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams). But the ceremony is quickly disrupted by clashes in the streets of New York between a tentacled demon and a teenage girl, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), endowed with the power to open portals in all dimensions of the “multiverse”, c i.e. the interconnected set of alternate realities.

However, this faculty is of the greatest interest to Wanda Maximoff, known as the “Red Witch” (Elizabeth Olsen), who, with the powers conferred on her by her evil grimoire, intends to appropriate it in order to live in a dimension where she wouldn’t have made the mistake of abandoning her two children. A fight begins, which takes the form of a chase beyond dimensions, where the Doctor sets off to meet other versions of himself or Christine, not without that within this procession doubles looms a second chance.

Parade of Macabre Creatures

As we can see, Doctor Strange episode 2 expands on the concept of the multiverse as introduced in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), which orchestrated the meeting of three recent incarnations of the famous spider hero. Here, however, it is less a question of merging the successive relaunches of a franchise than of fueling the story with the imagination of quantum theory and its parallel dimensions, a way for the screenwriters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to do proliferate the levels of a fiction that is now infinitely expandable.
