Does the motion of censure filed by the NUPES have a chance of succeeding?

Representatives of the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) in the National Assembly assured Wednesday that they intended to table a motion of censure against the government of Elisabeth Borne, that is to say just before her declaration of general policy, at the end of which the Prime Minister did not plan to ask the deputies for a vote of confidence.

A few days after his appointment, the new government will face a motion of censure on Wednesday. It will be filed by Nupes, on the sidelines of Elisabeth Borne’s general policy speech. The four left formations will table and vote on a joint motion. A response to Elisabeth Borne’s decision not to seek the confidence of the Assembly.

Extremely slim chances of overthrowing the government

Thing promised, thing due. La Nupes wants to force the Prime Minister to come to Parliament. Mathilde Panot, the president of the LFI group in the Assembly, assures us.

So the chances of getting the 289 votes needed to overthrow the government are extremely slim. But Jean-Luc Mélenchon, at a conference on Tuesday evening in Paris, makes it a question of democracy.

“They are blocking democracy”

“To vote for censorship is to vote that the majority of French people did not want this government,” he said. “We are going to vote no, we are going to vote for censorship. And you? But why didn’t you say it during the election that you could put up with Mr. Macron? Why didn’t you say it? Because that’s what you’re going to do. And now the thing is, you’re not going to block the institutions. No, they’re the ones blocking them because they’re blocking democracy.”

The National Rally and Les Républicains have already indicated that they will not vote for this motion, which could paradoxically strengthen the legitimacy of Elisabeth Borne. In the event of failure, this motion would be added to the 57 others which have failed since the creation of the Fifth Republic. Only one was adopted: it was in 1962, forcing Georges Pompidou to resign. General de Gaulle then responded by dissolving the Assembly.
