Ex-President faces trial over Capitol storm

The storming of the Capitol has a legal aftermath for Donald Trump. The former president has now been charged with conspiracy.
Former US President Donald Trump (77) has to answer in court for the storming of the Capitol in Washington. This was announced by a federal jury investigating the events of January 6, 2021 and other possible attempts by Trump to subsequently disrupt Joe Biden’s (80) presidential election in 2020. In the indictment that has now been published, Trump is accused of conspiracy on several counts. On the one hand against the United States of America itself, but also against the judiciary and against an official procedure.
Another accusation that may be justiciable is obstruction or an attempt to obstruct an official procedure. As the letter states, despite the election defeat, Trump was “determined to remain in power.” In addition to Trump, alleged co-conspirators are also named, including four of his lawyers, an adviser and a former Justice Department official. For more than two months, Trump has spread lies that the election was fraudulent and that he actually won the election.
Donald Trump’s spokesman reacted with drastic words
According to US media, the lawyers said at a press conference that the attack on the Capitol in particular was an unprecedented event in US democracy: “As described in the indictment, it was fueled by lies. By the accused’s lies.” Trump will attend a first hearing as early as Thursday, to the August 3, at 10:00 p.m. ET, expected in federal court in Washington.
In a first reaction, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung (41) said, according to the Washington Postthat the ex-president always obeyed the law and the constitution. He was always advised in his actions by highly qualified lawyers. His boss will “not be deterred by shameful and unprecedented political attacks”. The US nation is “in decline”.
