Ex-President Donald Trump has been charged with seven counts of handling secret documents, US media reports.

Donald Trump, 76, appears to be the first former US President to be indicted at the federal level. This is reported by CNN, among others. The case is about Trump’s handling of secret documents after he left the White House in 2021. According to US media, the 76-year-old could face seven charges, including unauthorized keeping of secret files. However, the allegations against Trump, who wants to run again in the next presidential election, have not yet been made public.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that he was innocent. He also reportedly revealed that he is scheduled to appear in federal court in Miami on Tuesday afternoon. The indictment will then be read out there. “I never thought that something like this could happen to a former President of the United States,” he wrote. He added: “This is indeed a dark day for the United States of America.”

Second charge this year

Trump’s attorney, Jim Trusty, told CNN the charges involved false testimony, obstruction of justice and illegal keeping of classified documents.

In the case, Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida was searched last year and numerous documents were confiscated, including around 100 allegedly classified as confidential. Some of these were apparently considered top secret.

It is the second time Trump has been criminally charged this year. In April, the Manhattan District Attorney indicted Trump on 34 counts of alleged falsification of business records. The background is said to have been a hush money payment to former porn actress Stormy Daniels, 44, before the 2016 presidential election. After the New York prosecutor’s office read the indictment in early April, Trump pleaded “not guilty,” as reported by The New York Times, among others. The trial could begin in early 2024.
