$83.3 million. This is the sum that Donald Trump will have to pay to the author, E. Jean Carroll, for having defamed her, against the backdrop of accusations of rape in the 1990s. A decision by a New York civil court that the former president calls it “ridiculous.” On his social network, he announced that he would appeal.

Former US President Donald Trump was ordered Friday by a New York civil court to pay $83.3 million to author E. Jean Carroll for defaming her, amid accusations of rape in the 1990s.

“It’s totally ridiculous.”

This astronomical amount, decided by the popular jury in the civil trial brought by former journalist E. Jean Carroll, 80, against Donald Trump, 77, breaks down into $65 million in damages, $11 million compensation for damage to reputation and 7.3 million in financial compensation, report American media present in the courtroom, including the New York Times and CNN.

The Republican favorite for the next presidential election criticizes this condemnation on his social network, Truth Social: “It’s totally ridiculous.” He once again accuses the judicial authorities of leading a “witch hunt” against him. Donald Trump also announces that he plans to appeal this decision from the New York civil court.
