The Democrats have unveiled their plan for impeachment against Donald Trump. The ex-president is threatened with a lifelong suspension of office.

Donald Trump (74) has already resigned from the office of US President, but the US Democrats are still pursuing the second impeachment proceedings against him. This could prohibit him from holding political office again. The accusation: "inciting a riot" due to his speech immediately before the storming of the Capitol by a violent mob of his supporters on January 6th.

Five people were killed. The impeachment against the predecessor of US President Joe Biden (78) is to begin in the second week of February, as the Democratic majority leader in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, announced on Friday (local time).

The impeachment process is conducted in the Senate. On Monday (January 25th) he is to receive the indictment from the House of Representatives. After the indictment has been read out and the senators have sworn an oath, the opening speeches, which mark the actual start of the impeachment proceedings, are to begin in the week of February 8th.

Democrats and Republicans each hold 50 seats in the Senate. In the event of a stalemate, Vice President Kamala Harris (56) can cast the decisive vote for the Democrats. A two-thirds majority is required in impeachment proceedings. Trump is the first US president in history to have two impeachment proceedings initiated.
