Don’t call them Volvo XC40 or C40 Recharge anymore, even if nothing changes

Volvo has just made a small update to the names of two of its electric models. A change that comes like a hair in the soup.

Volvo felt the need to rename two of its models to better identify them as electric cars. Thus, the brand confirms through a press release issued on February 20, 2024 that the electric XC40 and C40 are now respectively renamed EX40 and EC40.

The brand’s range of electric cars is thus easier to distinguish from hybrid models and in the process abandons the “Recharge” label which was not really clear. From now on, all electric models start with the letter E: EX30, EX40, EX90 and EC40.

A bit strange timing

It is generally wiser to wait until a model is renewed to change the name of a product. It is easier for a client to integrate the name change, if it is accompanied by a total or partial design change of the model. Volvo’s decision is a bit double-edged.

The brand will, for example, still find itself with the is not the case. The XC40 with electric motor will have to find its place in the minds of customers who should not confuse it with the new 2024 product which is the small entry-level urban SUV called EX30. Fortunately, it’s easier for the C40/EC40 which is only available in electric form.

The manufacturer wanted to make it simpler, but ultimately this risks losing more than one customer or prospect, despite what Volvo’s commercial director, Bjorn Annwall, said: ” By aligning our first pioneering electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we are simplifying choice for consumers. »

A power boost and a special edition to spread the news

The EX40 and EC40 therefore do not differ from the XC40 and C40 they replace. Performance, style and equipment remain the same for the moment.

On the other hand, Volvo took advantage of the announcement to introduce a special “black edition” for the two newly renamed models. They come with Onyx black paint, you guessed it from the name of the special series. The “full black” look is completed by black rims and black Volvo logos as well. Two interiors are offered, one in microtech and the other in fabric, also black in color.

To celebrate the news, Volvo also promoted a software update that can unlock 25 kW of additional power. This Performance mode is aimed at the high-end twin motor versions (Twin Motors) of the Volvo XC40/EX40 and C40/EC40. It is valid both on the new models on order, but also on the electric C40 and XC40 of previous vintages. Customers can place the order from their couch to update their old model and give it a little facelift. This will add to the car a new “performance” mode with a specific accelerator setting which allows you to take advantage of the new power of 325 kW.
