Don’t Look Up on Netflix: in this alternate ending, Meryl Streep was not supposed to end up naked

In an interview with Variety, director Adam Mckay revealed that two mid-credit scenes were being considered. If they kept the one with Meryl Streep naked, this is the other ending we should have had.

Warning this article contains spoilers on the end of the film.

As much criticized as adored by Netflix subscribers, Adam McKay’s latest film divides but it is talked about. Through the story of two scientists that no one believes, Don’t Look Up confronts us with our contradictions, especially with regard to climate change that affects us.

Mckay made a film true to his style: funny, squeaky, incisive. Don’t Look Up also includes not one but two post-credits scenes. In the first, we learn that the 2,000 people who left Earth in time were able to find a planet to land on. Arriving there, they discover a lush landscape and creatures hungry for meat, since the character of Meryl Streep – who got naked for the occasion – is devoured in the second.

A scene that could not have existed as the director explains in this interview with Variety : “Originally, the ending we chose was: “Okay let’s start building our houses”. And then someone said “Oh no, the capsule carrying the workers exploded!”

And there Mark Rylance would have said: “I give 1 billion dollars to the person who will build me a house”. And the person next to him would have bid “I’m giving 2 billion!” And there we would have realized that they are all billionaires. We would have heard “And me 5 billion! 10 billion!”

A scene which would therefore have been just as nice as the one chosen, and above all revealing the vanity of the human being. It was Meryl Streep who finally gave the filmmaker the idea of another ending, and we thank her for that.
