Drake revealed why ‘I Want It That Way’ means so much to him during his surprise performance at a Backstreet Boys concert.

Rapper Drake (35) performed at a concert on the Backstreet Boys’ DNA World Tour in Canada on Saturday night. During the band’s concert stop in Toronto, the rapper’s hometown, the 35-year-old surprisingly came on stage. Together with the musicians Nick Carter (42), Howie Dorough (48), Brian Littrell (47), AJ McLean (44) and Kevin Richardson (50) he performed the legendary song “I Want It That Way”.

A video, apparently uploaded by a fan, shows the Backstreet Boys bringing Drake – who they describe as the band’s “sixth member” – onto the stage. Then the rap star told the raving crowd why the song “I Want It That Way” meant so much to him.

Song reminds Drake of his childhood crush

At the age of 13 he celebrated his “Bar Mitzvah” – the celebration of religious maturity in Judaism. At that point he was in love with a girl. When the well-known song – according to Drake “one of the greatest songs in the world” – by the Backstreet Boys was played during the celebrations, the said girl came to him for the first time. She asked him “if I would dance with her,” he recalled. “It was the first time I felt recognized and it was the first time I felt, you know, I had a chance to be cool.”

He added: “If you can see me now, you know what I’m talking about”. When the melody of the world hit began to play, he asked the audience to sing along “as loud as they could” with him and the Backstreet Boys.

In his Instagram feed Drake also shared a short sequence of his surprise appearance a day later.
