A worker was hit by a construction train on Thursday afternoon in a serious accident at work on the Brenner Base Tunnel construction site in Innsbruck’s Sillschlucht. The man was fatally injured.

The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on the H41 Sillschlucht-Pfons construction site in the main east tunnel. The 57-year-old man had just been busy with surveying work, confirmed BBT spokesman Andreas Ambrosi. Cause of accident unknown At the same time, another worker was steering a 36-meter-long construction site train that delivers material to the tunnel boring machine into the tunnel. For reasons unknown to date, the 57-year-old was hit by the transport locomotive. An autopsy was ordered. The alarm chain was immediately set in motion. Rescue, fire brigade and police were quickly on the scene. The emergency doctor who was alerted could only determine that the victim was dead, the police said. The Innsbruck public prosecutor ordered an autopsy. Once the investigations have been completed, reports will be submitted to the public prosecutor’s office, the responsible security authority and the labor inspectorate, it said. A crisis intervention team was available to assist the workers on the construction site, said the Brenner base tunnel company BBT SE, which expressed its condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased.
