Duchess Meghan’s demand for paid parental leave is perceived as political activism. But she sees it differently.
Duchess Meghan (40, “Suits”) has recently been campaigning for the introduction of paid parental leave in the USA. Critics accuse the wife of Prince Harry (37) due to her membership of the royal family, lack of neutrality and unreasonable political activism. However, she sees it differently than she does at an online summit of the “New York Times” made clear.
People need support, “certainly if they have just had a child”
The 40-year-old took part as a speaker at the event “Minding the Gap” and admitted according to the US magazine “People” that the royals are traditionally politically neutral. For them, however, the issue of paid parental leave is not a political one. “Paid parental leave is just a humanitarian issue from my point of view,” she said.
“I think this is one of those issues that aren’t red or blue,” Meghan added, referring to the traditional colors of the two major political parties in the US – red is attributed to Republicans, blue to Democrats. According to the mother of two, the United States is “only one of six countries in the world that does not offer any form of national paid parental leave.” “We can all agree that people need support, certainly if they have just had a child.”
