At this year’s Invictus Games, Duchess Meghan made a small mistake: when painting with children, she wrote the Ukrainian flag the wrong way round.

During an appearance on the sidelines of the Invictus Games, which will take place from April 16 to 22, 2022 in The Hague, Duchess Meghan, 40, had a mishap that heated up tempers, especially on Twitter.

Duchess Meghan attracts attention with a fake Ukraine flag

When Meghan visited the British Embassy tent to paint with young children on Sunday, April 17, a photo was taken of her writing on a yellow and blue Ukraine flag that she had painted herself. As can be seen on the embassy’s Twitter account, among other things, Prince Harry’s wife, 37, wrote “peace” on the picture. She placed the word “peace” on the blue part of the flag – which was below her, i.e. the wrong way round.

The national flag of Ukraine usually consists of a yellow band with a blue one above it. The light blue represents the sky and the golden yellow represents the country’s wheat fields.

Misunderstanding on Twitter

Angry comments quickly arose under the Twitter post. One user wrote: “Wasn’t there anyone who could have explained to the Duchess of Sussex what the top and bottom of the Ukrainian flag is before she wrote ‘peace’ on it…”. Another Twitter user labeled Meghan’s faux pas as “embarrassing”.

But there are also soothing voices. One commenter even thinks Meghan deliberately drew the flag the wrong way round. She writes: “Historically, when the Ukrainian flag is hoisted or drawn upside down, it is a symbol of the country’s plight.” She is referring to the current Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Only she knows whether that was really Meghan’s intention. So far she has not commented on the matter.

Invictus Games in the Netherlands

The Invictus Games hold special meaning for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. At the third edition in 2017 in Toronto, Canada, Prince Harry caused a surprise: he made his first official appearance with his future wife. The 2018 games were subsequently held in Sydney, with both Harry and Meghan again in attendance.
