Oppenheimer, The Boy and the Heron, Killers of the Flower Moon, Elementary : 2023 was a very good vintage in terms of films and cinema.

As we find ourselves at the dawn of the new year, it’s time to see what the next twelve months have in store for us in this area. Here are the twelve films we’re most looking forward to in 2024 (and a few more).

Poor creatures – January 17

Bella is a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under his protection, she is eager to learn. Eager to discover the world about which she knows nothing, she runs away with Duncan Wedderburn, a clever and debauched lawyer, and embarks on a dizzying odyssey across continents. Impervious to the prejudices of her time, Bella is determined not to give in on the principles of equality and liberation.

When director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster, The Favorite) reunites with Emma Stone for an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s strange novel, this results in a unique and essential film object. A confusing, fascinating and (very) sexual tale where the actress La La Land shines like never before, in a story of emancipation at the heart of a world between Terry Gilliam and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Already one of the best films of 2024.

Argyle – January 31

The quiet life of Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist, is turned upside down when the plots in her books begin to come to life in reality. She then embarks on a frantic race across the planet to escape the killers, while the border between fiction and reality becomes increasingly vague.

Director Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman, Kick-Ass) is back for a meta spy action comedy that will remind some Chasing the green diamond. Choreographed fights, exhilarating action scenes, a touch of the absurd and a golden cast: Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella… We will be there.

Dune: part two – February 28

Paul Atreides joins Chani and the Fremen while plotting revenge against those who destroyed his family. As he is forced to make a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the galaxy, he must nevertheless do everything to prevent a terrible future that only he can predict.

The sequel to the film by Denis Villeneuve and the adventures of Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet) was to be one of the events of 2023… but it will ultimately be for 2024. More spectacular, more warlike, more everything, this Dune 2 promises to be the unmissable blockbuster of the start of the year.

Mickey 17 – March 27

Mickey7 is an individual sent to colonize a frozen planet. Each time he dies, his memories are implanted into a new body and his mission resumes. After dying six times, Mickey7 begins to understand the real purpose of his mission.

Five years after the acclaimed ParasiteKorean director Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Okja) is back for a science fiction film starring Robert Pattinson. It was obvious to have it in our big cinema expectations for 2024.

Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom – May 22

Many generations after Caesar’s reign, the apes took power for good. Humans, for their part, have regressed to the wild state and live in seclusion. As a new tyrannical leader gradually builds his empire, a young ape embarks on a perilous journey that will lead him to question everything he knows about the past and make choices that will define the future of apes and humans. …

After a trilogy which was able to revitalize the franchise by digging into the origins of Caesar while depicting the decline of humanity, the universe of The Planet of the Apes returns to the cinema for an opus more postapocalyptic than ever, and where the balance of power is completely reversed. Enough to tickle our curiosity.

Furiosa – May 22

As the world collapses, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a horde of bikers led by the warlord Dementus. While crossing the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials to find a way home.

This prequel to the visionary Mad Max: Fury Road will tell the story of the youth of the character played by Charlize Theron. Still signed by the master George Miller, the film will see Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Game) battling an unrecognizable Chris Hemsworth. The first images promise a stunning spectacle… and inevitably unmissable.

Vice-Versa 2 – June 19

Freshly graduated, Riley is now a teenager, which is not without triggering a major upheaval within the headquarters which must face something unexpected: the arrival of new emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust — which have worked successfully for a long time — don’t really know how to react when Anxiety arrives. And it seems that the latter is not alone…

Released in 2015, Vice versa is still considered to this day as one of Pixar’s latest jewels. This sequel will tackle sensitive issues related to puberty, and will offer a host of new emotions that we can’t wait to discover.

Deadpool 3 – July 24

Wolverine must reluctantly join forces against Deadpool to face a common enemy.

When the free electron that is Deadpool arrives in the MCU, it is obviously an expected event. Ryan Reynolds teams up for the occasion with Hugh Jackman, back as Wolverine, in a film that promises to dynamite the Marvel universe. Note, this is also the only MCU film of 2024. What (finally) is a good start?

Alien: Romulus – August 16

A group of young people living in a distant world will find themselves confronted with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

The Xenomorph is back, in front of the camera of the talented Fede Alvarez (evil Dead, Don’t Breathe). Why are we waiting for it? Because the saga definitely needs a good film, and a new look, different from that of Ridley Scott, seems the most beautiful promise. And because it was expected on Disney+… before the producers decided to release it in theaters. A good omen.

Gladiator 2 – November 20

The story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus saved by Maximus, and who became an adult.

Nobody asked for it, and yet it arrives: the sequel to the cult film Gladiator by Ridley Scott, released in 2000. The British director returns behind the camera to bring to life a screenplay by David Scarpa (Napoleon) with a prestigious cast: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou… Even if we are skeptical, we will be there.

Nosferatu – end of 2024

A gothic story of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing with him unspeakable horrors.

The talented Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman) is back with a remake of FW Murnau’s silent film classic, released over a century ago. A rereading of the myth of Dracula, in a gothic and macabre atmosphere as desired, and carried by a cast of tasty actors: Emma Cori, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult… and Bill Skarsgård in the role of the terrifying Count Orlok. We will be there.

Ferrari – Prime Video – current 2024

During the summer of 1957, Enzo Ferrari, a former racing driver, was in crisis. Bankruptcy looms for the company he and his wife, Laura, started from scratch ten years earlier. Their tumultuous marriage must cope with the loss of a son and the recognition of another child. To try to ensure their survival, he goes all out on a race – 1000 miles across Italy, the iconic Mille Miglia.

Why are we waiting for it? Because beyond its story dedicated to one of the great figures of the 20th century, Ferrari is above all the next film by Michael Mann. The director of Heat, Ali, Collateral And Miami Vice had not released a feature film since 2015. In the lead role, Adam Driver still promises a high quality performance.
