During welding work – spark ignited diesel: burned out garage

A 74-year-old was doing welding work in his hobby garage in St. Michael (Leoben district) on Saturday morning when a spark set the diesel bottle on fire. 18 firefighters from FF St. Michael were able to prevent it from spreading to the adjacent garage, but the man’s workshop burned down completely. He sustained injuries of an unspecified degree.

First, the 74-year-old tried to extinguish the flames himself shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday, which threatened to spread to the garage next door. Only the St. Michael fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire with 18 emergency services at 12 noon. A spark may have jumped onto a bottle of diesel from the previous welding work. The fuel ignited; the man’s hobby workshop burned out completely as a result. Fortunately, the adjoining garage remained undamaged. The Upper Styrian was injured to an unspecified degree in the incident. However, he refused hospital care.
