Earthquake in the canton of Jura – The earth shook again near Porrentruy – News

  • In the canton of Jura, the earth shook again on Tuesday night.
  • According to the Swiss Seismological Service at ETH Zurich, the tremor at Porrentruy had a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale.

According to the earthquake service, the quake occurred at around 1:40 a.m. near the village of Réclère about 14 kilometers southwest of Porrentruy / JU. It should have been felt near the epicenter.

Damage is generally not to be expected in an earthquake of this magnitude. The epicenter was around 6.5 kilometers deep.

Quake of 4.1 at Christmas

An earthquake was last measured in the canton of Jura on December 25th – the strongest in 100 years. The tremor had a magnitude of 4.1. This tremor was felt widespread in the Jura, but also sporadically throughout the western Central Plateau as far as Lausanne, Bern, Lucerne and the western canton of Zurich.

Some people called the police after feeling the tremor. There were no known reports of damage. There were several aftershocks after the strong quake.

The main quake occurred on Christmas Day at around 1 a.m. at a depth of around 5.9 kilometers. Closest to the epicenter was Damvant, the village in the far west of the Pruntruter Zipfel near the border with France.

Weak tremors are common

In Switzerland there are always mostly smaller earthquakes. Last year, the earthquake service registered over 1,100 earthquakes in Switzerland and neighboring countries. The population actually feels around 10 to 20 tremors with magnitudes of around 2.5 or more each year.

The largest historically documented earthquake in Switzerland to date occurred near Basel in 1356. It had a magnitude of 6.6.
