QUITO, July 19 (Reuters) – Thirteen inmates were killed in a prison in the city of Santo Domingo, Ecuador, on Monday, the national prison agency said, in a new deadly incident in prisons in the Andean country.
The government of conservative President Guillermo Lasso attributes the prison violence to clashes between gangs for control of territories and drug trafficking routes.
Some 316 prisoners were killed last year in riots in prisons across the country. (Report Alexandra Valencia; French version Jean Terzian)
