The group of private nursing homes Orpea, shaken since January by a scandal involving its practices, announced Monday that it intended to recruit massive staff to ensure better care for residents.

Orpea wants to “take better care of residents, employees and caregivers through an ambitious recruitment and continuing education program”, indicates the French group in a press release.

Orpea plans to recruit 550 people per month by the end of the year, half of whom are nursing assistants. It aims to increase to 800 monthly recruitments in 2023.

“We are in the process of recruiting, it is extremely difficult, it is not just a problem for Orpea”, commented to journalists its new general manager, Laurent Guillot, on the sidelines of an event organized by the group. .

The sector is currently facing a shortage of staff, due to working conditions considered difficult for low salaries.

To accelerate its recruitments, Orpea must “also rebuild the human resources team, with in particular staff in the regions to recruit as close as possible to our establishments”, underlined Mr. Guillot, who will present a transformation plan for the group “d a few months from now”.

Present in 23 countries, Orpea has been in turmoil since the release in January of the investigative book “Les Fossoyeurs”, which accuses it of mistreatment of residents, accounting fraud and questionable human resources practices.

Justice opened a preliminary investigation in April for institutional mistreatment and financial crimes, following a report by the government.

The group, which manages more than 350 establishments in France, presented Monday the conclusions of its “General States”, launched in May to collect the grievances and suggestions of residents, their families and staff.
