For the very first time, more electric cars than diesel were sold in Europe in June. The market share of the first has gone from 10.7 to 15.1% in just one year on the Old Continent, while Tesla crushes everything in its path.
Despite the detractors, the electric car is becoming more and more popular, and this obviously shows in the sales figures. We remember, for example, that the Tesla Model Y remains the best-selling car in Europe, all engines combined. The SUV was even the most registered model in the world throughout the first quarter of 2023.

But the crazy rise of the electric car is not expected to slow down any time soon, especially since the sale of thermal models will be banned throughout Europe from 2035. Only a few manufacturers such as Caterham will be spared thanks to the said amendment. “Ferrari”, but they too should turn to this engine. No wonder it is taking up more and more space in the sales figures.
We remember that last December, electric vehicles exceeded diesel sales in France, with a market share of 16%, against 14% for cars running on diesel. But now, it is on a European scale that electric dominates diesel, as reported by the Association of Manufacturers (ACEA). In a press release, the organization explains that the market share of this engine is increased from 10.7 to 15.1% over the whole of June 2023, compared to the same period last year. A good progression, with no less than 158,252 registrations last month.
Result, this engine is the 3rd choice of European motorists, behind gasoline and hybrid. This alternative has a market share of 24.3%, compared to 7.9% for plug-in hybrids. Good news, when you know that these are harmful to the environment, because their battery is often left empty. Which explains why Brussels wants to see them disappear in the future.
Tesla at the top
Looking a little more in detail, we note that it is above all in the Netherlands, Germany as well as France and Belgium that the rise of electric cars is the most important. No doubt this is linked to the high number of terminals, while we have now exceeded the 100,000 mark in our territory. More generally, the success of this engine is also explained by another phenomenon.
This is the price reduction operated by Tesla, which has encouraged many motorists to opt for a vehicle of the brand. As explained BFM-TV, one in five electric cars is a model from the American firm. If the ACEA does not give details, there is a good chance that the Model Y will be in the lead, followed by the Model 3. However, this one was overtaken by the MG4 in May.
Over the first six months of the year, the electric market share reached 14.2% for electric cars against 12.8% for diesel. The big shift has therefore taken place.
According to the data released, Elon Musk’s company has sold no less than 47,606 cars in June, an increase of 105% compared to last year. This increase can be explained by the ramp-up of the Berlin factory, which now produces 5,000 Model Ys per week. But also by the fall in prices and by deliveries from China or the United States.
