X.com, formerly Twitter, is making changes to the functionality for blocking an account. The company aligns with the vision of its billionaire owner, who has repeatedly criticized this system.

Since buying Twitter for $44 billion, Elon Musk has made drastic changes to the social network. Longer posts, paid offer, remuneration for publications, video… Everything is in place to make the platform a super-application, the ultimate ambition of the businessman.

He also implemented much more lax moderation rules, in accordance with his very personal vision of freedom of expression. Describing himself as a libertarian, Musk defends what he describes as ” absolute freedom of expression “. The latest novelty announced on X.com goes precisely in this direction.

The blocking on X.com is over

From now on, ” if a user who blocked you replies to one of your messages, you will now be able to see their response » under your posts, indicates the X.com engineering team in a publication. When blocking a profile, all replies from the profile in question were previously invisible.

This change allows you to identify and report potential bad content that you couldn’t see before, which protects both your account and the overall integrity of our platform », justifies the social network.

Hide rather than block

As early as August 2023, Elon Musk announced that “ blocking will be removed as a “feature”, with the exception of DMs (Editor’s note: private messages) “. According to him, blocking a user “ no sense “. The billionaire instead pleads in favor of the possibility of hiding an account, while continuing to follow it if necessary.

These efforts are part of our ongoing commitment to aligning the blocking function with our principles as a public square. Our goal is to allow users to control their experience while maintaining public visibility of messages », continues the company.

Many users say they are against such a change, which could expose some people to more harassment. Indeed, even blocked, a malicious account can still harangue its victim under its own posts…
