Electricity prices: no further increase in 2022, assures Barbara Pompili

For several months, energy prices have been panicking in Europe, going so far as to approach historic records. This Tuesday, the Minister of Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili reassured the French and their wallets: there will be no increase in electricity prices in 2022, she said on BFMTV.

“We are committed to protecting the French by offering them a tariff shield and we will keep this commitment”, she explained, facing Jean-Jacques Bourdin. “The increase in electricity will be maintained at 4% as announced, throughout 2022”, in accordance with government decisions.

A point already mentioned by the Minister of the Economy Bruno le Maire, guest on LCI, Monday. “The reality is that if we do nothing, the French electricity bill will increase by 38 to 40% at the beginning of February, because energy prices are exploding everywhere”, he said, worrying about this outbreak. “The French must have the guarantee that their purchasing power will not be threatened by the increase in electricity prices”, he assured. To do this, the government intends to find a solution “by the end of the week”.

Barbara Pompili also mentioned additional measures to avoid a postponement to 2023, if the rise in market prices continues. “It is not a question of holding out until the presidential election before a sudden rise”, has also promised the tenant of Bercy on LCI.

According to the Minister for Ecological Transition, the total measures concerning energy prices have already cost “14 billion” euros to the state. She also explained that there would be no general blackout despite the shutdown of four nuclear reactors, depriving France of 10% of its production capacity through these plants.
