In the midst of traditional celebrations for the “Day of the Dead” in Mexico, eleven men and boys were found shot dead in a rural area in the state of Michoacán. Six young people between the ages of 15 and 17 were among those killed, the state attorney’s office announced on Tuesday (local time). The investigators therefore assume crimes in connection with the rampant drug crime.
According to earlier information, the victims of violence were found shortly before midnight on Sunday evening. On the night of November 1st, the celebrations of the Day of the Dead, one of the most important celebrations in the country, begin in Mexico.
Over 36,000 murders last year
Michoacan is one of the Mexican states hardest hit by organized crime-related violence. On October 18, an attack on a bar in the capital, Morelia, left six people dead. Recordings from the security cameras recording the crime had quickly spread over online networks.
Since the government launched a controversial anti-drug operation in Mexico City in December 2006, more than 300,000 violent deaths have been recorded in the country. In the past year alone, the authorities recorded more than 36,000 murders.
