Something promised, something due. Elon Musk has made public the generative artificial intelligence Grok, designed by his young start-up xAI. From now on, developers and researchers can use it for free in their projects.
The Grok conversational agent was unveiled last November with the ambition of directly competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Elon Musk indeed has a heavy history with the company, which he co-founded and then left. Things got worse recently when the billionaire decided to take legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman. He criticizes them for not having respected their initial agreement to develop artificial intelligence that is open and beneficial to all humanity.
At the same time, Musk announced that the Grok AI would, for its part, be available as open source. It is now done.
No training or real-time data
Grok is available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows its commercial use, but does not include the data used to train it or connections to X.com for real-time information. Note that here, this is the foundation model on which the conversational agent is based, like GPT-4. Companies will have the opportunity to release improved versions of AI.
Developers or researchers wishing to use it will have to configure it, because in this state, it is not set for any specific use. Grok has 314 billion parameters, propelling it straight into the top of the most powerful open models, which opens up new possibilities for those who want to exploit it.
For its part, Llama 2 de Meta makes its research available for free, but charges its customers. The firm also prevents developers from iterating on the model.
A secure model?
Questions still arise around the safety of the model. Grok was originally developed to provide humorous responses and demonstrate sarcasm. The moderation and safeguards deployed within the model are unknown, raising fears of possible malicious use of the system.
One thing is certain, Musk has the ambition to shake up the AI market. Technology enthusiasts were particularly enthusiastic on social media. Even OpenAI employees have expressed interest in the model.
