Elton John is finally EGOT: With his Emmy, he has now won all four major entertainment awards.

Elton John (76) won an Emmy on Monday evening (January 15th). So far, so unspectacular. But winning the world’s most important television award puts the singer in an exclusive club. John is now the 19th artist to achieve EGOT status. He has won all four major entertainment awards: Emmy (television), Grammy (music), Oscar (film) and Tony (theater/musical).

Elton John completed the four-pack with the Emmy in the “Outstanding Variety Special” category. He won the award for “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.” The live stream of his concert in Los Angeles as part of his farewell tour can be seen on Disney+.

The event beat out the Super Bowl halftime show and a Netflix comedy special by Chris Rock (58). Two broadcasts of EGOT awards were also nominated: the Oscar and Tony awards.

This is how Elton John built his EGOT status

Elton John took the first step towards EGOT in his very own field. In 1987 he won the Grammy in the category “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals”. The award was given to the song “That’s What Friends Are For”, which the Brit sang together with Dionne Warwick (83), Stevie Wonder (73) and Gladys Knight (79).

Five more Grammys followed later, including for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”. Elton John also won an Oscar for the song from “The Lion King.” The second Academy Award went to “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from his biopic “Rocketman”. Elton John then won the Tony for his musical “Aida”.

The last newcomer to the EGOT club so far was Viola Davis (58), who is primarily active as an actress, in 2023. Other big names with the showbiz quadruple include Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993), Mel Brooks (97), Andrew Lloyd Webber (75) and Whoopi Goldberg (68).
