Emmanuel Macron announces the creation of a commission of French and Algerian historians on colonization

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday, August 25 in Algiers, the establishment of a joint commission of Algerian and French historians to study the archives on colonization and the Algerian war.

“We have a common past” who “is complex, painful” and “we decided together” to create “a mixed commission of historians” for “look at the whole of this historical period”, “from the beginning of colonization to the war of liberation, without taboos, with a will (…) full access to our archives »said the French head of state during a joint statement with his counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on the first day of his visit to Algeria.

“Promising Prospects”

In a statement to the media, the Algerian president was pleased to “encouraging results” which allow to “tracing promising prospects”on the first day of Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Algeria.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune underlined the determination of Paris and Algiers to” go forward “ and D’“intensify efforts to enhance relations between the two countries”. He mentioned the revival of several intergovernmental committees, including the high-level committee (CHN), the joint Franco-Algerian economic committee, the Algerian-French strategic dialogue committee and “an intensification of high-level visits”. It is also planned to“intensify cooperation at all levels and trade”.

The meeting between the two leaders has, moreover, “was an opportunity to discuss the security and political situation of common interest at the regional and international level”added the Algerian president.

“We exchanged our points of view, particularly on the situation in Libya, Mali, the Sahel and Western Sahara which require joint efforts to consolidate stability in the region”said Mr. Tebboune.
