As Europe 1 revealed last week, Emmanuel Macron is preparing a vast reshuffle for the month of January. The head of state is taking advantage of the current truce to work on the changes he wishes to make within the government. With the objective of relaunching his five-year term after the very eventful immigration sequence.

A painful episode for the executive from which the head of state intends to learn lessons. After the adoption of the immigration law, which caused significant turbulence in the ranks of the majority, in particular because of the numerous concessions made to the right, Emmanuel Macron now intends to relaunch his five-year term. And take advantage of the parliamentary holidays to think about the contours of a major reshuffle which could take place during the month of January.

Thus, the ministers who threatened to resign during the vote on the immigration law, all from the left, could pay the price. Among them, Rima Abdul Malak, Minister of Culture, publicly disavowed by Emmanuel Macron for having mentioned the possible withdrawal of the Legion of Honor from Gérard Depardieu.

The calendar remains unclear

Several other portfolios could also be reallocated. Olivier Dussopt, Minister of Labor, is suspended from the judges’ decision concerning his trial for favoritism which will be handed down on January 17, while in Matignon, Élisabeth Borne seems once again threatened.

Internally, several advisors note a failure of the government’s strategy in the Assembly, and evoke the need for “new momentum” after the adoption of the pension reform by 49-3 and the vote of the motion to reject the immigration law. If the reshuffle appears to have been confirmed, the timetable appears much more vague. The president could reveal the outlines during his wishes to the French on Sunday December 31. 2024 will in any case be a pivotal year for the head of state who intends, with this reshuffle, to govern until 2027 while the race for his succession should accelerate after the Olympic Games.
