Emotional chaos: 5 signs that you are emotionally overwhelmed

Do you feel deaf and mostly unmotivated? Then your emotional world is probably somehow out of joint. 5 warning signs that you are emotionally in chaos.

Usually feelings help us to master our life and to find our way. They signal us who or what is good for us and what makes us unhappy or hurt. But if the feelings become so strong, for example, that we can hardly stand them, or if we have too much to listen to, they can plunge us into emotional chaos. This in turn always comes to our feet sooner or later – and in extreme cases even prevents us from continuing to live.

5 signs of emotional overload

With these warning signals, your alarm bells should ring: They indicate that you are either headed straight for the emotional overload – or are stuck in the middle.

1. Even everyday little things are often too much for you

  • Laundry stays with you in the machine for days after washing,
  • Your passport or ID has been expired for months
  • and emptying your mailbox is horrible for you because the unopened letters are already piling up in your apartment.

These are probably not evidence of your laziness, but signs that you are having extreme problems motivating yourself – which in turn is probably due to the fact that your emotional balance depends on half-mast.

2. You are looking forward to bed – but not at all tomorrow

When you get up, you long for one thing in particular: that it is quickly evening and you can go back to bed. No matter whether Monday, Wednesday or Saturday, you will find it exhausting every day – but not in the challenging way, but in the annoying one!

3. Difficult decisions are difficult for you

  • Order food or cook yourself?
  • Strawberry or raspberry yoghurt?
  • Jeans or skirt?
  • Tie hair together or open?
  • Am I going to the club or not?

You often need an eternity to understand the most banal things. Most likely explanation: Your inner compass, your intuition, is on strike, spinning, wrongly poled or whatever – but definitely not there for you as usual.

4. You don't feel like anything you used to like

Too windy for jogging, you can stream movies sooner or later and just sitting in a café and talking to friends is boring. Suddenly you have more excuses not to do things than reasons to do something. Why it is like that? Because your motivation has apparently switched to standby.

5. You lie awake at night without following a clear train of thought

"If I fall asleep now, I have eight hours … now there are six … now three … damn it!"

Do you remember last night? And penultimate? And the one before that? Probably there is chaos in you right now that does not allow you to calm down. And with each tired day you feel less up to it …

If you are familiar with one or more of these signals, you should do something about it – emotional overstrain rarely resolves itself. If it works somehow (and somehow it always works!), You can take a break, for example (maybe a sabbatical?). It may also make sense to get professional help.
