Employed persons in Switzerland – labor market still on the upswing after the pandemic – News

  • Compared to the first quarter of the previous year, the number of people in employment in Switzerland rose by 1.7 percent to 5.1 million.
  • The number of employed women increased more than that of men.
  • The unemployment rate rose from 4.4 to 4.6 percent compared to the previous quarter of 2021.

The number of employed men rose by 1.4 percent and that of employed women by 2.0 percent. Seasonally adjusted, the number of people in employment remained the same between the fourth quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. This is the result of the Swiss Labor Force Survey (SAKE) published by the Federal Statistical Office.

The unemployment rate as defined by the International Labor Organization (ILO) rose to 4.6 percent in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter. It is thus significantly higher than the unemployment rate as defined by Seco, which only counts the registered unemployed.

In addition, Seco does not publish quarterly but monthly values. The last value (April) was 2.3 percent, in the three months of the first quarter – January, February, March – it was 2.6, 2.5 and 2.4 percent respectively.
